Employee Spotlight: Meet Ruben

Q: What is your current role at Sertifi? What does your job entail?
A: My role is Web Application Developer. I’m on the NEXT GEN Team, so I take care of any development work that’s going on for the NEXT GEN project, which is a rewrite of the current application. I code new features the Product team has and fix bugs the QA team has.

Q: What was the recruitment process like?

A: It started with a one-hour phone call with Michael, the Chief Technology Officer. Then they gave me a coding assignment to complete at home. It was followed by a one-hour in-person interview. It’s pretty chill compared to other tech companies.

Q: What is your favorite part about working at Sertifi
A: Overall, my favorite thing about Sertifi is its culture, especially on the Dev team. Everyone is like their own boss, as they work at their own pace. You learn what you want to learn, and if you need help, everyone is always helping each other.

Q: Tell us about some cool projects you are working on these days.
A: The most recent cool thing was setting up the demo for HITEC Minneapolis. It allowed users to access NEXT GEN to explore the new user interface and walk through the process of sending a request, such as a payment or document.

Q: Is there anything that surprised you since you started working at Sertifi?
A: I was really surprised by the rapid growth of the company. When I joined Sertifi, it was under 50 employees, but now the total number is much greater, so everyone was joking about the office space getting smaller and smaller. As the team continues to expand, there are more creative ideas being brought up, and it definitely helps spread the workload.

Q: When did you become interested in web development work?

A: I’ve been interested in computers. When I went to college, I wanted to be a game developer, and I realized I wasn’t that good at math or physics. I tried to go to the graphic side of it but my dream kind of crashed. But I have a knack for web development, so I started from there. I always wanted to work in Chicago, and there are a lot of web development jobs here, so that’s another factor.

Q: Outside the office, how do you usually spend your free time?
A: I play drums, so I play music with some of my friends. I listen to a lot of rock music, and I’ve played drums with different rock bands since high school. I also joined a bowling league, so I go bowling once a week. Sometimes I just chill at home with my cat (it’s a tuxedo cat if you are wondering).

Q: Tell us something you are proud of in your life?

A: Last year, I graduated from the graduate school at Depaul University. It took me four years because I was a part-time student in addition to having a full-time job. I would have to go to class from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. every Wednesday after I got off work. When the class had giant projects, it would take me a while and become a little stressful, but I somehow got used to it.

Q: If you could have dinner with any famous person, who would you choose?

A: I would say Jack White from the White Stripes. He has been pretty influential since I was a teenager. He is a big baseball fan, and I love baseball too.
